1. Focus on your purpose
Plan everything according to your purpose. If you plan to sustain your long-term travel, you already made the first step. Explore the country in your free time, but at the same time do well in your new job as an English teacher. Aside from planning your itinerary in your free time, plan your lessons well. Your purpose now as a teacher is for your students to learn.
2. Keep an open mind
You are now in a new country where cultural perspectives may be different from what you’re used to. Understand this new culture, and accept it as it is, in a positive light.
3. Learn their language
Learning a new language helps make your transition in a new land easier.
How to meet friends in the area
- Make new friends. Join a teacher’s group, or a hobby club, or any sports club you’re interested in. Befriend locals who can help you make your transition easier.
- Remember names and listen more than you talk about yourself. This will help you befriend people easier.
- Don’t wait to be approached. Be friendly enough to initiate a conversation, reach out.
- Do volunteer work and engage in activities you like. You will meet like-minded persons who you can be friends with.
- Have an active social life, so you relax in your free time and helps you understand, or even engage in, the customs and traditions of the country you’re in.

Children
Tips: Children learn through play. Play keeps them engaged. Keep your lessons interactive, fun and stress-free. A particular age needs to master a developmental skill, make sure to harness that in teaching your lessons.

The internet is a good resource, and as I mentioned previously, provides a host of sites that can aid you in teaching. If the internet is not possible, books, magazines, personal anecdotes, personal experiences, items you find around you, and your visual aids and teaching kits like a notebook, pen, paper, and a few coloring materials are all good ideas as teaching materials.
Teenager
Tips: Teenagers are learning more about themselves and are sometimes overwhelmed with physical, emotional, psychological changes and adjustments as they transition to young adulthood. Expect mood changes in some. Try to understand that this is more about the changes going through them and not about you.
When you teach teenagers, keep their trust by saying what you mean and mean what you say. Make them feel understood even if you sometimes don’t agree with their views, and make them feel accepted because sometimes, that’s all they want- to be acknowledged and accepted as mature, responsible individuals.

Again, the internet sites I mentioned are good resources. Books that interest them are also good sources. Find a movie that they like and custom your lessons around this interest.
Adult
Tips: Find out their purpose in learning English. Do they just want to learn conversational English? Do they need help in academics? Are they enrolled to learn Business English? (I will discuss this in a later chapter.) Once you find out exactly what they needed from you, then you can tailor-fit your lessons to meet their needs.
Along the way, you can engage adults through friendly conversations injected in every lesson, as long as you’re still on the topic to make sure your lesson time is well-spent.

Find a book or a movie of interest. You can also rely on internet sites where teaching materials are freely given, with loads of ideas for you to choose from.

With English as the lingua franca or universal language of world commerce, countries the world over, particularly those non-English speaking countries who have a high demand for English teachers, recognize the language as a necessity in their economic progress and development. In this line, Filipinos have found a way to earn a living through teaching and speaking the language.
