Last month, we were guests by Luxembourg tourism to visit different castles in this tiny yet beautiful country. Luxembourg is a country in Europe known for its gorgeous medieval castles, a mix of French and German culture, and spectacular landscapes. It’s a unique country unlike any other one in Europe. Visitors can easily learn about the culture and historians of Luxembourg by visiting one of the many castles throughout the country. There are so many to choose from, which is why we’ve created a list of the ten best castles in Luxembourg for you to enjoy!

The Grand Ducal Palace

This active castle in Luxembourg was first the city hall of Luxembourg from 1572 to 1795, and in 1817, became the residence of the Governor. It’s the residence of the Grand Ducal Family. Entry is 10 euros, and there are daily guided tours during the summer months to this castle in Luxembourg.

There are plenty of things to do around this castle in Luxembourg! Here are a few of them:

• Notre Dame Cathedral: This is a beautiful cathedral in Luxembourg with stained glass close to The Grand Ducal Palace
• Chocolate House: For those of you craving some chocolate, come enjoy anything from hot chocolate to chocolate shakes, and more!
• Saint Michel’s Church: The oldest church in Luxembourg City
• Philharmonie Luxembourg: This concert hall has massive columns, where visitors can enjoy the cultural and acoustic aspects of Luxembourg.
• US Military Cemetery: There are over 5,000 US burials at this cemetery from WWII. There are long rows of white crosses, adding to the overall humbling experience.
• Blues and Jazz Rallye: Live bands and musical performances fill the streets of Grund and Clausen every summer until the early hours of the morning.
• Mudam (Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean): This quirky museum is in a historical location, and offers a unique perspective of Luxembourg’s cultural side.

Esch-Sur-S^ure Castle

This gothic castle in Luxembourg is now a ruin and gives visitors a very feel with its crumbling and disintegrating walls. It’s located along a meandering river, the River S^ure. It’s available to visitors to explore the ruins during the day, and at night, is illuminated in beautiful lights, giving visitors of this castle in Luxembourg wonderful photo opportunities.

Here are a few things to do near this castle in Luxembourg!

• Explore the Duch vum Séi: This is an old cloth factory that is still used by the nature park Upper-S^ure and a museum with an extensive collection of old textiles.
• Swimming and canoeing at the lake Upper-S^ure, Hiking in the woods offering beautiful views of the castle.
• Eat at Restaurant au Vieux Ch^ateau: Enjoy French cuisine on a beautiful garden terrace right near this castle.

Larochette Castle

This castle in Luxembourg dates as far back as the 11th century. It was destroyed by a fire in the 16th century, and since then, has undergone restoration. The castle is in Larochette, near the White Erez. Visitors can visit the castle every day from Easter until October, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Mullerthal Trail: This countryside trail is a great way to get some fresh air and see a bit of the country in Luxembourg
• National Museum of Military History: It illustrates realistically the Battle of the Bulge 1944-45. The entrance is 5 euros for adults, and visitors can explore several floors of military artifacts from World World II. It is more or less 14 km from Larochette.
• General Patton Museum & Monument in Ettelbruck: This is an important statue dedicated to General George Patton, who played an important role in the war. It’s a great way to learn about more of the history of Luxembourg, more or less 15 km from Larochette.

Chateau de Vianden (my fave!)

This castle in Luxembourg was created between the 11th and 14th centuries. It’s one of the most beautiful Gothic residences in all of Europe.

In 1977, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg transferred it to the state and from then on the was restored into something of European importance, and today, it’s a beautiful representation of the medieval era.

• Vianden Chairlift: This is a great way to see the surrounding area. Take the chairlift one way to the castle, and then walk the other way to experience the best of both worlds!
• Trinitarian Church: This beautiful Roman Catholic church offers coziness, peace, and tranquility.
• Indian Forest: This climbing course promises adventure to those of you looking for it! It’s a 15-minute walk from the castle, and is a great way to get active and see the spectacular views when you climb to the top of the trees!

Mersch Castle

This is one of the castles belonging to the Valley of Seven castles. It dates back to the 13th century and was built by Theodoric. This castle in Luxembourg is of Renaissance style. It is now the Town Hall of Mersch, and while visitors cannot go inside the castle, they can still enjoy the stylistic build from the outside and important history.

• Go Camping in Krounebierg: This is considered to be one of Luxembourg’s best campsites! It offers a tranquil campsite, and has available space for caravans, camping cars, and tents!

Wiltz Castle

This castle in Luxembourg dates back to 1573. It’s mostly known for hosting an international annual music festival and attracts international orchestras and artists to put on a lovely performance. Jazz, rock, and classical music make up the festival’s performances, which run from June until July.

Luxembourg Castle

This is one of the castles in Luxembourg belonging to the Valley of the Seven Castles. It was built in the first half of the seventeenth century as ‘House Forges,’ and now has beautiful gardens spread out throughout the front that was built in 1750.

Bourglinster Castle

The construction of this castle in Luxembourg began in the 14th and 15th centuries, was partially destroyed by war in 1542 and 1544, and then rebuilt in 1548. In 1982, the Bourglinster Music Festival was founded, with receptions, lectures, and concerts taking place inside the castle.

• La Distillerie: This dining establishment gives visitors a unique experience of dining in a stone chamber with comfortable furnishings, warm colors, and delicious food.

Clervaux Castle

This castle was built in the 12th century by the Count of Clervaux on a rocky promontory, overlooking the city. This castle hosts 3 museums including The Family of Man, Museum of the Battle of the Bulge, and Museum of Models of Luxembourg Castles.

• Cabana Lounge: This is a quiet bar in Clervaux that serves delicious drinks and is a great place to relax after spending the day exploring the castles in Luxembourg

• Museum of the Battle of the Bulge: This museum has military equipment and gives visitors a different, more personal perspective of the war. Visitors will learn about the history of the Battle of the Bulge, which happened in 1944.

• Circular Walk Clervaux: This gorgeous hiking train in Clervaux allows travelers to escape into the fresh air and wander around in nature.

• The Family of Man: Photographic exhibition conceived as a manifesto for peace and the fundamental equality of mankind, expressed through the humanist photography of the post-war years. UNESCO World heritage.
• Museum of Models of Luxembourg Castles: This is an exhibition on the castles in Luxembourg. Each castle is reconstructed to its miniature version. The miniature castles are on hilltops and rocks and are a great way to see all of the castles of Luxembourg if you’re short on time.
